Inscriptions on front paste-down: Gabt.[?] Thorne 1730, ex dono Bertram Ashburnham Nobly; Whitfield Curteis, Smarden; cujus apud mortem Carolo [Thring?] Magne, {Midor.?] Norton, 1835. Bertram Ashburnham (1797-1878), 4th Earl of Ashburnham, was well-travelled and an avid collector of books and manuscripts. Rev. Whitfield Curteis (1777-1834) was Rector of Smarden. There was a [John] Charles Thring, a founder of modern cricket, who lived from 1824-1909, but does not seem to be the signer here.
