Description
Summary:This case examines the importance of workplace apology. It highlights apologies from four extremely different workplaces involving: a death row inmate; a cartel trafficking in drugs; the CEO of Norfolk Southern Corporation; and an author responding to a publisher. An etiquette of apology, tapping the two civil manners of generosity and trust, is introduced. It discusses the relationship between various motives for apology that either help or hinder the building of trust in the apology's recipient. The problem of some people refusing to apologize, as well as the relationship between gender and apology, are also explored. Each reader is reminded of the metaphoric unlimited supply of apologies in one's "pocket" that should be used intentionally throughout each workday to create and maintain a positive environment for productive work.
