Description
Summary:Berger Paints India Ltd. is a leading Indian paint company important in the industrial paints segment. The company organized two co-creation events to identify coating-related issues, with approximately 20 collaborators participating in the events. In these events, customers had a platform to discuss issues in the areas of paint quality, selection of a coating system, environmental conditions, aggressive timelines, surface preparation, and the quality of painters and their experience level. The customers identified two primary issues that needed to be addressed, which were associated with the quality of painters. Although painter knowledge and skills shortcomings were an issue, it was just one of the reasons that coatings fail. After addressing that issue Berger should focus on solving problems such as training their dealers to make correct suggestions on the best-suited products for clients. Berger should also invest in research and development to improve the paint quality as an increasing number of customers were looking for eco-friendly paints without compromising the durability of the coatings. Decision-makers at Berger faced a dilemma as to which direction Berger should move. That is, whether they would be self-reliant in solving every problem in-house or outsource or co-create with suppliers or customers, especially in those areas that are not in their core competence.
