| Summary: | This case narrates the history of the Kam family, whose patriarch, Kam Shui-Fai, established the iconic Yung Kee restaurant in Hong Kong in 1936. After serving its famous roast goose for more than six decades, the death of the founder set in motion a bitter feud among his children, resulting in a long-drawn court case. While one branch sought to keep the legacy of the original restaurant, which had lost its Michelin star in the process, another branch set up a new restaurant that gained its Michelin star shortly after opening. Cousins from the third generation now preside over a divided legacy but are united in serving the best that Cantonese cuisine has to offer. Students will be asked to reflect on the typical characteristics of first, second, and third generation family firms through the lens of this case, as well as evaluate the nature of a family business legacy as the entrepreneurial family grows over time. |
