Description
Summary:The case discusses the growth and profitability challenges faced by Bird Rides Inc. (Bird), a dockless electric scooter (e-scooter) rental and micromobility solution provider, founded by Travis VanderZanden in April 2017 in San Diego, USA. Although Bird was expanding globally, its per unit economics for the scooters were not profitable. Moreover, riders carelessly parked these e-scooters on pathways, which led to issues of theft and vandalism. VanderZanden responded to these challenges by coordinating with local authorities in several U.S. cities to improve infrastructural development and launch sturdier scooters, such as Bird Zero. Going forward, what steps should VanderZanden take to make e-scooters a feasible short-distance urban transportation solution? How should he make his enterprise profitable? What growth routes should he consider to further expand the business?
