| Summary: | In this case study, students take on the role of Alex, the Manager of Sport Development at Baseball Canada, a national sport organization in Canada. Baseball Canada piloted Baseball5™, an innovative program, in 2019, in response to youth sport participation trends shifting from organized to nonorganized settings (Jeanes, Spaaij, Penney, & O'Connor, 2019) and from traditional, mainstream sports to nontraditional, new or unique sports (Turner, 2013). The student is tasked with analyzing and/or interpreting a variety of program evaluation data of the pilot program of Baseball5™ to prepare recommendations for the Board of Directors of Baseball Canada as to how to design and implement a full Baseball5™ program. This case study illustrates the innovative ways that national sport organizations can introduce new programming that may generate participation in a traditional sport; the innovation in the Baseball5™ case is that Baseball Canada used a traditional sport in a nontraditional format and unorganized fashion to generate interest in a traditional organized sport. The subject matter of this case study exposes students to innovative ways of addressing youth participation trends by introducing a new nontraditional way to participate in a seemingly traditional sport, and how this is experienced by players and coordinators alike. |
