| Summary: | During my doctoral work, I had the opportunity to conduct a 3-year ethnography that examined the emotional culture of flight attendant work at a North American-based commercial airline. Most of the data were obtained from participant observation of flight attendants in their natural working environment, which included recording field notes from observational and conversational activity, and 15 face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Participant observation is based on the immersion of the researcher with the people under study for a lengthy period and gathering data through continuous involvement in their lives and activities. In this case study, my co-author and I will outline some of the difficulties we encountered while conducting this ethnography. The lessons we offer in this case study will help students conceptualize the challenges that researchers commonly face while conducting participant observation and guide them toward strategies that can be employed to overcome them. |
