Autograph of E. Compton on title page and (in a different hand) "Compton Place" in front matter. Compton Place is a country mansion in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. It 18th century owner, Sir Spencer Compton, was known to have had a large library. "E. Compton" might have been Elizabeth Compton, Countess of Northampton (1694-1741), who married Sir Spencer's nephew. Bookplate of Lois Goddard Morrison on front paste-down. |
