In gilt letters on cover: Mr. Hulme's Exhibition, Mr. Ridge, Braz. College 1793. "Mr. Hulme's Exhibition" was a a scholarship founded by William Hulme (1631-1691) of Lancashire, England to enable young men from the poorer classes to attend Brasenose College in Oxford. "Mr. Ridge" is probably Thomas Ridge, who was awarded the Hulme Exhibition in 1792 and received his M.A. from Brasenose in 1793. (From the Brasenose College Register 1509-1909, page 388.)
