Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the Texas Association of School Administrators' mentor program, Learning for Leadership: A Mentoring Program for Texas Superintendents, on the transition of first-time superintendents as perceived by mentor and mentored superintendents. The total population of mentor program participants (183) during the 2000-2001 school year was sent a survey to obtain their perceptions of the mentor program processes, the mentor relationship and whether mentoring activities related to the standards of the superintendent certificate. A total of 138 of the 183 surveys (75.4%) were completed and returned. Survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study indicated that participants perceived the program structures and proces-ses to be satisfactory. Dimensions of the mentor relationship identified by Cohen (1993) were reflected in perceived behaviors of the mentors. An ANOVA revealed no significant differences between groups in Relationship, Informative, Confrontive, Mentor Model and Employee Vision dimensions. Significant differences in perceptions of mentor behaviors of the Facilitative dimension were revealed, indicating greater facilitative behaviors perceived by mentors than by mentored superintendents. The researcher made the following recommendations: 1. A follow-up study of mentored superintendent participants to determine the long-term impact of their mentoring experience on their transition to the superintendency 2. A study of a cohort group of mentor superintendent participants to determine if mentoring experience affects mentor behaviors in subsequent years 3. A study of the impact of gender in the mentoring relationships 4. Orientation sessions for mentor and mentored superintendents and an initial meeting in order to introduce mentor and mentored superintendent pairs 5. Revisions in the mentor matching process to consider location and district demographic information 6. Periodic group meetings in order to enhance communication, with a final group meeting as a culmination of the mentoring program 7. Consideration to extending the formal mentoring program to a second year 8. Seeking of resources which would adequately fund the Texas First-Time Superintendents Mentoring Program processes 9. Inclusion of mentor program models in organizational and university superin-tendent preparatory programs.
