| Summary: | Second and third grade aggressive (n=174) and prosocial (n=112) boys and girls were administered the Social Cognitive Ability Profile - Revised and the Feelings Questionnaire. Parents and teachers rated the children on callousness and shallow emotions. Poor internal consistency precluded the use of parent ratings. It was hypothesized that: 1) compared to prosocial children, aggressive children would report higher levels of happy or neutral feelings in response to sad or mad events on the Feelings Questionnaire, 2) compared to prosocial children, aggressive children would obtain higher ratings of callousness and shallow emotions, and 3) higher ratings of callousness and shallow emotions would be predicted by higher levels of child-reported happy or neutral feelings in response to sad or mad events, lower levels of self-reported distress associated with acting aggressively, and lower levels of self-reported distress of the victim of aggression reported by the child. Aggressive status did predict teacher-rated callousness and shallow emotions, but it did not predict children's minimization of negative emotion on the Feelings Questionnaire. The third hypothesis, regarding the association between children's self-reports of emotions and other's reports of callousness and shallow emotions was not supported. These results are discussed along with recommendations for future research. |
