| Summary: | This is an action research, naturalistic, participant-oriented study. The study's purpose was to take an in-depth look at what happens when middle school students evaluate their teachers. Nine teachers and approximately 400 students were involved in a reciprocal approach to teaching. Students were able to tell their teachers what needed to happen to support learning in their classroom. The students were asked to evaluate teaching methods, classroom environment, classroom policies and procedures, teachers' strengths and weaknesses, and anything that affected student learning. The teachers evaluated and responded to the feedback in an effort to improve student learning. The researcher collected data over a nine month period using the following methods: observations, surveys, interviews. The results of the data collected identified three main areas: pedagogy, student/teacher relationship, and implementation when collecting student feedback. In the area of pedagogy, students were able to give teachers insight into the do's and don'ts when conducting group work, and factors in the physical environment, which support or do not support learning. The students were also able to comment on how teachers can better prepare students for testing, homework assignments, and even how to better discipline students who distract from the learning environment. Another area focused upon the affective relationship between teacher and students. Teacher and students added to the understanding of classroom relationships such as: teacher kindness, use of humor, teacher self control, and ownership in the learning process. With this research, implementation strategies were identified by the teachers concerning student feedback. This study provides the reader with a thick description of the nine teachers involved in the study and insights into classroom dynamics. This research found student feedback to be a powerful tool to support positive change for improving student learning. |
