| Summary: | In Conroe Independent School District, discussions are ongoing regarding, elements of academic teaming, scheduling, interdisciplinary curriculum/instruction, and school climate and how these factors affect student achievement. The fourth grade teachers at Colin L. Powell Elementary took on the challenge of attempting to improve instruction by departmentalizing subjects which involves a modified block schedule. The purpose of this study was to describe the four-teacher instructional model at Colin L. Powell Elementary School and the school experience of the school's fourth grade students as constructed by the parents, the teachers, and the students. The five major areas reviewed were: (1) academic teaming, (2) parallel block scheduling, (3) extension center, (4) integrated/ interdisciplinary instruction, and (5) school climate. This research followed the guidelines in Educational Research: An Introduction (Gall, Borg & Gall, 1996) to develop the parent, teacher, and student questionnaires. Following a series of questions seeking responses on a five point scale, each set of respondents were asked two open-ended questions: "What do you like about the four-teacher instructional model?" and "What do you dislike about the four-teacher instructional model?" The open-ended questions were constructed following the guidelines in Doing Naturalistic Inquiry (Erlandson et al., 1993). The teacher and parent questionnaires combined published instruments along with items designed by the researcher. The findings of the study focused on the three research questions that guided the study: How may the four-teacher instructional model implemented at Colin L. Powell Elementary be described? What is the perception of students regarding their school experience in the four-teacher instructional model? What is the perception of parents regarding the school experience of fourth grade students in the four-teacher instructional model? What is the perception of teachers regarding the school experience of fourth grade students in the four teacher instructional model? |
