Description
Summary:The present experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of presenting an intervening task between massed presentations. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated the effectiveness of an intervening task in increasing the free recall and recognition of massed presentations of a list of words. Experiment 3 then demonstrated the same result with more practical materials. In that experiment, participants who viewed the training videos in a spaced sequence correctly answered more questions on the posttest relative to participants who viewed the training videos in a massed sequence. These results both apply and expand on the results of Experiment 1 and 2. Also demonstrated in Experiment 3 was the use of the intervening interval to present a second set of to be learned material. The results of Experiment 3 are important for a couple of reasons. First, they demonstrate an effective within session spacing manipulation. Second, superior performance was demonstrated with the spaced sequence on an immediate test. These results should provide educators and trainers with a valuable method to increase retention of to he learned material.
