| Summary: | The present study examined the relationship between intended rating behavior and rater perceptions of appraisal characteristics and organizational variables. Several rater motivation models were examined to develop a conceptual model of intended rating behavior. The model measured five determinants of intended rating behavior: (1) perceptions of the appraisal process; (2) the purpose of the appraisal; (3) the perceived rewards and consequences of ratings and trust in the system; (4) the supervisor-subordinate relationship; and (5) perceptions of organizational variables. A questionnaire was completed by 266 supervisors (e.g., sergeants, lieutenants, and captains) of the Harris County Sheriff s Department. Results indicated that perceptions of appraisal characteristics, the purpose of the appraisal, and rewards, consequences, and trust in the system were significantly related to intended rating behavior. In addition, the supervisor-subordinate relationship and organizational variables significantly influenced intended rating behavior. These results supported the five hypotheses. The findings of the present study as well as future research ideas are discussed. |
