| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to survey site-based teams to determine the level of empowerment perceived by team members in Region W Education Service Center. Eighteen different campuses were administered the Site-Based Teem (SBT) Inventory. Site based teams in six high schools, six middle schools and six elementary schools were included in the study. Over 200 surveys were generated from this process. The researcher administered the SBT inventory in person at each campus. Analysis of data focused on addressing the research questions. 1. Do members serving on the site-based decision making teams feel empowered because of their participation on the team? 2. Is empowerment perceived differently by elementary, middle school, and high school members who serve on the site-based decision making teams? 3. Is empowerment perceived differently based on the size of the school? 4. Is empowerment perceived differently by members who represent different constituencies? (i.e.. teacher, parent, administrator, business leader, community member) 5. Which lacers are perceived as the most influential to the success of a site-based decision making team? 6. Which factors are perceived as the most detrimental to the success of a site-based decision making team? Graphs were used to depict the data for questions one through four. A tally method was utilized to organize the responses connected to questions five and six. The results of the data analysis indicate that members serving on the site-based decision making teem do feel empowered. Empowerment is perceived differently by high school team members compared to elementary and middle school levels. The size of the school has no bearing on the perception of site-based team members. Administrators perceived a higher degree of empowerment than teachers. The most frequently cited factor perceived to influence the success of the teem was team cohesion/respect for members/atmosphere, and working in a non-threatening environment was close behind. Lack of support from administration/true power was cited most frequently as a detriment to the success of the team. Recommendations for further study should focus on the organization and design of campus decision making bodies. Also, the nature of questions being addressed bathe SBDM needs to be investigated. |
