| Summary: | The present investigation was an effort to link the study of racial discrimination with interpersonal conflict. Specifically, this study focused on the effects that different styles of conflict management have on discrimination between two individuals experiencing a mixed-race dispute. One-hundred-twenty male subjects were paired with a same- or different race confederate who displayed an avoidant, contentious, or cooperative conflict management style. It was hypothesized that subjects would perceive group boundaries, report negative stereotypes, prejudice attitudes, ingroup bias, negative internal attributions, and perceived dissimilarity, and demonstrate negative nonverbal affect and arousal during conflicts with a different-race partner using a contentious conflict style. These same responses, at a lesser intensity, were expected to be invoked by avoidant conflict styles and minimized by cooperative conflict ones. Results indicated that subjects exhibit the discrimination responses significantly more frequently when interacting with a different-race than same-race confederate displaying a contentious or avoidant conflict style. Conversely, cooperative conflict management minimized the discrimination responses. The findings of this investigation have strong implications for research conducted in both areas of interpersonal conflict and intergroup relations, as well as consequences for real-world, mixed-race disputes. |
