| Summary: | In this study, the social interactions of preschool children, with and without special needs who participated in an inclusion classroom, were examined. An expansion of Bakhtin's view of child scenes and worlds resulted in emerging data that demonstrated how children constructed their worlds of classmates in the classroom community of the inclusion classroom. The thirteen children participating in the preschool inclusion classroom were observed and informally interviewed. The adults in the classroom were formally and informally interviewed and observed. All of the parents of the children were formally interviewed and parents of the children studied in depth as case studies were also informally interviewed. Qualitative methodology was used to gather and to analyze data. The phenomena that emerged from the data included all of the children using culturally defined dichotomies, expressing their distinctive selves, and building social cohesions while constructing their worlds of classmates in the classroom community. This study indicated that both children with and without special needs may use the same approaches to constructing worlds of classmates and points to encouraging evidence of potential benefits of inclusion in this particular classroom. |
