Description
Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the training of preservice teachers in process oriented assessment and the amount of participation of minority students during reading lessons in the elementary grades. Some hypotheses advanced were: 1. Student teachers trained in process oriented assessment while student teaching involve more minority students in classroom discussion during the reading period more than student teachers who are not trained in process oriented assessment. 2. The relationship between training in process oriented assessment and minority student participation in reading lessons is not reflected identically at the primary grade levels and at the intermediate grade levels. 3. The relationship between training in process oriented assessment and gender related minority student participation in reading lessons is not reflected identically at the primary grade levels and at the intermediate grade levels. A sample of 35 elementary preservice teachers from two Texas school districts participated in the study. One treatment group of preservice teachers was instructed in the rationale and correct use of process oriented assessment while a control group did not receive instruction. Elementary students (N = 742) were observed during a direct instruction reading lesson using a participation guide. The data were analyzed by means of factorial analyse of variance with two levels on each of three factors and three levels of one factor. The dependent variables were observed classroom participation of students. Hypothesis one was supported by the data. Hypothesis three was supported by the data for one dependent variable.
