|a "Roqueros y folcloroides [Rockers and Folklorists] is an enlightening and entertaining essay. It is enlightening because it succeeds in presenting numerous arguments intended to demonstrate the thesis that, because rock—or roc, if we are to Hispanicize the term—certain kinds of music rooted in folklore, and protest songs all arose simultaneously in the United States of America—the metropolis—they constitute closely related and strongly interconnected movements. Moreover, far from being antagonistic, those who have embraced them share essentially identical aesthetic, social, and political ideals. To say that this is an entertaining book is appropriate because it is written in a casual tone—although it might be more accurate to call it sarcastic and even vitriolic—a tone very much in keeping with the way rockers and folk-protest musicians have challenged, and continue to challenge, the world of their elders. Federico Arana (Tizayuca, Hidalgo, 1942) has been a rocker, a folk-protest musician, and even a mariachi for nearly thirty years."--Page 4, cover.
