| Summary: | "The fact that there are so many current schools of psychology representing divergent general viewpoints and methods of approach places a heavy task upon both the instructor and the beginning student. This is especially true now that the text book method has been replaced to a large extent by topical discussions without due regard to their relationship in a general scheme. The organization of lecture and reading material is seldom sufficiently stressed. The technical terminology of the science is much larger than one might suppose. Clear cut statements of the views of the leaders of the more important schools of thought are not easy for the elementary student to select from his reading and properly collate. In fact, the need for pedagogically sound guidance of some sort is generally recognized. The present work is an attempt to meet this need. It aims to present in a clear and logical manner the treatment of the more important schools on the topics of major interest in current class room discussion. It is, in fact, a synopsis of psychology as we find it presented in the leading textbooks of the day. Not only is the material arranged under carefully selected topics, but the book is also very well indexed making it possible to locate each item with ease and convenience. The book should serve a useful purpose in guiding the beginning student in his first approach to psychology. Moreover, it ought to prove equally valuable as a basis for such review work as is necessary in preparing for examinations. The exercises at the end of each chapter should be helpful in stimulating thought and in awakening a deeper interest in psychological problems"--Introduction.
