| Summary: | "In this book we bring together the work of various comparative psychologists whose work has one foot in traditional psychology and the other in the interdisciplinary mainstream of research in animal behavior. Our goal has been to summarize the current status of some important research in comparative psychology and to tie this work to general principles. Although we have tried to illustrate exciting approaches rather than to provide an exhaustive survey, we hope that this book also will be useful as a textbook for advanced courses in comparative psychology. The approach to comparative psychology emphasized here entails a broad-based, biological approach to the study of behavior with an emphasis on the natural lives of animals. In a sense, this represents the realization of the "comparative behavioral science" envisaged by Frank Beach in a textbook he wrote in the late 1950s but which, regrettably, he chose not to publish. I thank all who played a role in the publication of this book. Most important are the authors who wrote it and who generally did so remarkably close to the schedule agreed upon. Pessimists sometimes bemoan the small number of comparative psychologists active today, but I believe we have an embarrassment of riches. I regret the extent to which we have had to limit the size of this volume, thus excluding some very fine comparative psychologists. From the standpoint of the viability of the field, however, this is a good problem to have.
