| Summary: | "How personalities grow is your story. Whatever your age teen or twenty or thirty or older your personality, which is the total you, has been growing since you were born. It is continuing to grow, and to change in many ways, every week and month and year of your life. Your every experience brings some change, often subtle and unobservable, sometimes so striking and forceful that it almost seems as if "from that moment" you are a different person. Every individual whom you meet those whom you already know and those who are newly met has some impact upon you so that an attitude, a feeling, a point of view may become altered if only by a shade from the way you reacted before. Personalities grow through experiences, social and otherwise. But experiences are not always fortunate, are often very demanding or very frustrating. One's reaction does not always result in healthful personality growth. If you understand the ways of growth, and the reasons back of reactions, you are better able to make wholesome and successful adjustments. Your personality reflects your inner self, relates to everything that occurs in your life, regulates your adequacy or inadequacy in meeting everyday happenings. You know that personalities vary very widely: cheerful, gay, gloomy, anxious, eager, kindly, sullen, friendly ... you have met them all. Have you ever thought how they came to be as they are? Have you ever wondered why you are as you are? Recognizing the many different kinds of personalities, has it nevertheless ever occurred to you that underneath the surface people are actually very much alike? Can you reconcile those apparently contradictory statements? Can you sense the samenesses among people? Can you see how learning to understand your own personality better will help to understand others better? And to get along better with them? Those are some of the questions which this book answers. In addition, it tells you how to use such understanding"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2014 APA, all rights reserved) |
