| Summary: | "This monograph is the first of a series reporting the results of the RADIR symbol studies. The RADIR research project at the Hoover Institute and Library is a study of the revolution of our time and its influence on the development of international relations. One phase of this research program was a study of trends in the key symbols of modern politics. The present volume deals with the problems and methods of these symbol studies; subsequent volumes report the actual results. The first chapter of this volume discusses the role of political symbols and the ways for their systematic study. Chapter ii outlines the specific approach of the RADIR Project. Chapters iii through viii deal with the technique of content analysis--chapters v and vi being specifically concerned with how this technique was used in the RADIR program, and chapters vii and viii, which contain suggestions for future symbol studies, being designed primarily to help future researchers in the field advance beyond the point we reached in our studies.
