At the same time, the book will provide an adequate introduction for those who plan to do advanced work in this field. The history of the introductory course in psychology parallels closely that of introductory courses in biology and the natural sciences. Until quite recently, the first course in psychology was designed chiefly to prepare students for advanced work in the subject, although this objective was not always clearly defined nor rigidly followed.
