| Summary: | "Based on the authors examination of William James's library, the author considers the important question of the marginalia. An attempt has been made in these pages to reinterpret some of the motives and complexes in James, as well as his attitude toward certain trends and movements. The atomistic account of his personality, as presented here, would possibly not have been relished by the protagonist of a composite approach to the study of psychological facts, but there seems to be no alternative under the circumstances. The purpose of this book is to deal with the man, and not with his ideas, except insomuch as they assist us in better understanding his personality. This volume is not even a biography, in the general sense of the word. The marginalia, dealing, as they do, with only two fields of James's activity, serve merely as samples.
