Adam Lockyer examines four types of maritime deterrence strategies: offensive sea control, defensive sea control, offensive sea denial, and defensive sea denial. These strategies can be mobilized by communicating that one or more of them will be attempted in a crisis and have a high likelihood of succeeding.
