| Summary: | "In support of around twenty modern and contemporary artists from the Pinault Collection, the "Clair-obscur" exhibition crosses, from darkness to light, the heritage of chiaroscuro which resonates with the present time. The museum is transformed into a luminist and twilight landscape, where the often immersive works are revealed in a play of shadows and lights. "Clair-obscur" thus borrows its title from the contrasts of the famous chiaroscuro, which has been present in painting since the 16th century, in Mannerism and the Baroque age, like the work of Caravaggio which intensifies its use, plunging the earthly world into darkness, while rays of light accentuate the dramatic tension and spiritual issues underlying the work. His influence is felt in the work of Victor Man, a set of works of which will be presented, and the poetics of Bill Viola, two major pieces of which belonging to the Pinault Collection will be exhibited, which inspires old masters to bring about bodies emerging from the shadows in a slowed temporality."--Publisher's website. |
