From dealing with authoritarian regimes in Iran and Thailand to protests for social justice in the United States and India, visual art is playing a vital role in expressing fear, frustration, and resistance while envisioning alternate futures. Questions of colonial legacies in art institutions and complications surrounding the restitution of artworks remain ever-relevant in the global racial reckoning. The issues of racial, social, and historical justice at arts institutions and in creative fields are no longer abstract conversations, but demand operational answers in addition to new intellectual considerations. Much of this conversation is happening at the national level, but the interconnected nature of issues and their rapid movement across national borders demands a more expansive frame to understand the global implications of the intersection of politics and the visual arts field. Edited by Vishakha Desai, this multidisciplinary and transnational project of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University aims to study new trends and new issues affecting the art world both in specific cultural contexts and through a transnational lens. The contributors focus on the last decade, recognizing that social media-oriented protests and conversations have made the intersection of politics and visual images increasingly visceral and expansive. The book aims to understand the unique nature of this moment in history, compare it to similar periods-especially the late 1960s and early 1990s-and contemplate future directions.
