| Summary: | "Connection reflects on how our use of technology has shaped our consciousness, resulting in ever-increasing technical sophistication and enhanced creativity. At the same time it has supported the capitalist desire for more-more goods, more energy-threatening human communities, habitats of other species, and the viability of the planet itself. But these negative effects are not inevitable, and technology itself points to some alternative paths to sustainability and economic justice. The book explores the origins of our aversion to and fascination with technology through a dialogue with classics of European literature, history, economics, and philosophy, each counterpoised with a contemporary counterpart and framed within a comparative cultural context. From precursors of capitalism and commercialization to contemporary music and film, all considered through the lens of philosophy and environmental humanities, it argues that nostalgia for pretechnological innocence is understandable but misguided and that a strong personal, social, political, and collective ethic and aesthetic, pragmatic and praxis-oriented, are essential if we are to utilize technology in service to environmental sustainability and economic justice. Above all, these are issues for philosophy, as they go to the core of what, why, and how we consume and how we can exercise judgment, sensibility, and value to confront them"-- Provided by publisher. |
