| Summary: | According to the US Committee for Refugees (USCR), there are between 300,000 and 500,000 Polish nationals outside Poland. Most, however, do not apply for asylum, preferring to wait for the possibility of eventual return to their country. In February 1982, there were 28,000 Polish asylum seekers in Austria plus an estimated 50,000 who had not registered with the government. This report examines the options facing the Poles presently living outside their country: temporary asylum; third-country resettlement; and local integration in the first-asylum country. US Government policy towards the resettlement of Poles in the US is also examined. USCR recommendations include: 1) improved services and opportunities in both first-asylum and resettlement countries; and 2) planning by the international community for a possible mass exodus of Polish refugees in the future. |
