| Summary: | This is the first in a series of three papers on refugees in Eastern and Southern Africa. It discusses the key terms and definitions, and the origin of the main refugee movements, before producing statistical data on the refugees in the emergency relief phase within the regions (as of mid-1986). The author then deals wih the prospects for durable solutions or new movements corresponding to the situations in Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda/Burundi and the problems linked to South Africa. The last chapter summarizes the refugee situation in each of the 18 refugee-producing countries in the two regions. The reports are based on information available as of March 1987. The Ford Foundation Nairobi Field Office gave a grant for the preparation of this paper.
