520 |a The subject of this book are the ancient quarries distributed along the coast of southeastern Sicily between the Cassibile river and Portopalo di Capo Passero, described and compared with similar monuments documented in other areas of the Mediterranean. The study of ancient quarries, as is well known, involves a general vision of the processes of exploitation of the material and extraction, transport, installation in the monuments for which it was intended. Approaching the subject from this perspective, the case presented here reveals its peculiarities. The opening of a quarry on a coast has in fact historical, topographical and managerial implications specifically determined by its location: except in special cases, the understanding of the phenomenon must in fact include the intent to transport the material extracted by nautical means. However, even this information is not enough. The use of the territory in ancient times was aimed at all the economic opportunities it could offer, for sustenance, commercial production and infrastructure.
