| Summary: | Bosquejo histórico de las letras cubanas is an initial result of the efforts of a young, Marxist-oriented literary scholarship in Cuba, which since 1959 has organized itself for a critical review of the national cultural heritage and for a productive dialogue with new literature. José Antonio Portuondo, head of the Central Institute for Cuban Literary History at the Academy of Sciences in Havana and a prominent cultural policymaker in his country, traces in his essayistic presentation the signs of an independent literary activity, emancipating itself from the mother country Spain, since the conquest of the island in the 16th century. The author sees the beginning of a first literary flowering marked by Cuban Romanticism and the beginnings of Modernismo in the great poets Casal and Martí. Meanwhile, the semi-colonial condition of society hindered the free development of artistic creation until the socialist revolution of 1959. Conclusions for future development are suggested. Rudolf Noack has enriched the presentation with further material.--Page 4, cover. |
