Description
Summary:Artist and intellectual, Lia D Castro (Martinópolis, São Paulo, 1978) investigates how race, class, gender and sexuality relations occur in situations of intimacy and vulnerability. The artist uses prostitution as a research tool and develops her production from encounters with her clients - cisgender men, mostly white, heterosexual, middle and upper class - to subvert relations of power or violence that may arise between them, combining life history and social history. Themes such as masculinity and whiteness, but also affection, care and responsibility, are addressed in these meetings, which result in paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and installations created by the artist in a collaborative way. This is the artist's first solo exhibition in a museum and includes 36 works produced between 2013 and 2024, as well as records of her work process. The title of the exhibition is based on the historical absence of minority groups in positions of power and decision-making - nowhere - while their presence and workforce make up the bases that sustain society - everywhere. This social stratification, reflected in the way art history has defined the roles of those who represent and those who are represented, is contested by Lia D Castro in her work, when she redefines this logic using affection, dialogue and imagination as tools for social transformation.
