| Summary: | "Badger Clark searched for his own identity and a place that felt like home. He found both in the wide-open range of the southwest, the wilderness of the Black Hills, and the solitude of the desert. His writings reflect his respect and love of both the land that became his home and the people who became his friends. Badger was quite surprised that he enjoyed writing "cowboy poetry" and folks enjoyed reading it! He advocated for responsible stewardship of the land and respect for all living critters. His strong words in "Lead My America" urge today's citizens to remember the democratic ideals that forged this idealistic nation: the equality of all human beings; liberty and justice for all. All. No exceptions. Badger hoped to see the growth of western literature, a unique expression of the life, landscape, and struggles of 20th century western America. He wrote: "The West had produced wheat and gold and cattle ... but it is a dream of mine that, as it grows older, it will produce things of more permanent value - literature ... in its brief history there is material for twenty thundering epics." To the end of his days, Badger Clark served as South Dakota's poet laureate and was a popular entertainer who enjoyed telling cowpoke tales and introducing listeners to the thoughts of many cowpunchers. Live simple. Sit quietly. Look around. There's beauty everywhere"-- Provided by publisher. |
