| Summary: | In a continuation of the RoadMap series in Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Biochemistry, an update on a previous chapter in Volume 63 (2010)1 on lectin-carbohydrate interactions is provided. The updated article (Chapter 1) entitled "Mechanism of Multivalent Glycoconjugate-Lectin Interaction: An Update" (by T.K. Dam, O. Hohman, L. Sheppard, and P. Bandyopadhyay of Michigan Technological University and C.F. Brewer of Albert Einstein College of Medicine) points to the fact that the mechanism of multivalent binding is fundamentally different from those mechanisms generally described in the literature for monovalent interactions. Models and mechanisms of multivalent binding derived from quantitative data on a variety of lectins and glycoconjugates are summarized in the review. Such data, provided by new methodologies, provide impetus for the development of new, more well-defined components for the study and real-world application of complex lectin-binding interactions. |
