The commitment to translation forces us to take this brilliant and elusive text on its own terms, taking care to stay as close as possible to its meaning and register. We have tried to guard against over-interpreting, embellishing, and/or making associative connections. As we began our work of translation, familiar but more specific textual questions quickly emerged. For instance, there were many occasions where ideas in Subject As Freedom seemed to resonate quite clearly with those articulated by some Indian or western philosophical school or philosopher.
