| Summary: | "This book reviews the concept of home range and reviews the history of studying and quantifying home ranges. The author defines a home range as an animal's cognitive map of the local environment that the animal knows and understands. Thus, a home range is not something that a biologist maps from her perspective but is, instead, a concept within a study animal's brain. Understanding how animals use their environments requires figuring out how animals view their environments. The book reviews the scientific method, emphasizing hypothesis testing, and reviews different kinds of models. Using different modelling approaches is a good way to generate hypotheses: information models, economic models, optimal foraging models (foraging for a home range), game theoretic models, and statistical models. The book emphasizes using mechanistic familiarity distributions (generally called “utilization distributions”) in conjunction with the many modelling approaches to understand how animals perceive their environments."-- |
