Description
Summary:"Abstract The purpose of this chapter is to present an analysis of factors associated with children's development in families living in poverty in Colombia. The manuscript focuses on parent-child relationships as a niche for children's socio-emotional development. An integrative theoretical perspective to examine child development and the influence of the family and other microsystems on individuals' developmental trajectories is presented. This model involves three main components: an ecological-systemic perspective to understand children's development; a transactional model that will be used to analyse the parent-child subsystem and its impact on children's development, and a conceptualization of resilience to understand children and families' trajectories when facing vulnerable conditions such as poverty. Research conducted both internationally and in Colombia on risk and protective factors for children growing up in poor families is analyzed. Lastly, current family and child-focused policies that impact the development of children living in poverty are analyzed. This chapter ends with recommendations for child development research and policies in Colombia. Keywords Child development, ecological perspective, parent-child relationships, poverty, public policies, transactional model"--
