|a "This chapter examines Book 13 of Tacitus' Annals, the opening book in his account of the emperor Nero and covering the first four years of his reign (54–8 ce). I examine three key aspects of Book 13 touched on in the opening two chapters that lay the groundwork for much of what will transpire in books 14–16 (and were presumably present in the concluding two books of the Annals): Nero's mentors, Seneca and Burrus, as well as other individuals against whom Tacitus invites us to measure the emperor; the women in his life, especially his mother Agrippina; and Nero's increasingly bad behavior and deterioration, especially as they play out at or are associated with various locales in the city of Rome. Tacitus interweaves other issues, themes, and events into the narrative of Book 13, but usually connects them in one way or another with these three overarching concerns"--
