| Summary: | "When you read this book and let the words and the stories wash over you, know that it is both me and my beloved Jefferson speaking to you. Together, both earthbound and in spirit form, we come to you humbly to share what we know and love about Black people in America and in the diaspora. We'll tell you of the places we've traveled to get closer to ourselves and closer to a sense of home and comfort. Together, we'll analyze our experiences and tell you stories of the people we loved and the people who didn't know how to love us back. We'll share places we needed to seek refuge and the places that provided us a cool breeze, a place to rest and a place of sanctuary. While I've spent the last decade collecting stories within my own family and Black Angeleno migra-tion patterns, it was my dear Jefferson who lived it. It was he who had the foresight to collect, document and share these stories with his community. He spoke of me, my dad and our descendants when he wrote about why he did this work. I will do the same with all of you. This story is a collection of fragmented histories quilted together with both my and my great-great grandfather's hands. Together, we'll show the city of Los Angeles, the place we made our home. The place we put down roots and the place that helped us redefine family"-- Provided by publisher. |
