| Abstract: | "Even for the casual observer, it is difficult to ignore the role that engineers currently play in Indian society, whether it be in the economic sector, the social imaginary, or public debates. Despite the place engineers occupy in the country's economy and social imaginary, there have been few studies devoted to them. This book fills this gap by examining, through original and empirical studies, the emergence and evolution of the modern engineering profession beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century. Engineers constitute the supreme intermediary body, both in the system of production and in society. This collection of essays aims therefore at demonstrating the importance of studying Indian engineers to understand Indian society. It examines the evolution of the engineering profession from a socio-historical perspective. By examining the position of Indian engineers, it hopes to contribute to answer some fundamental questions, such as the evolution of social stratification and social mobility in India, the specificities of the Indian trajectory of capitalist development, or the evolution of the nature and prerogatives of the Indian state. The book is divided into three parts: the first is devoted to the study of the economic and social issues at stake in the production of engineers. The second part explores issues of social reproduction, caste discrimination, and professional identity. The final part of the volume focuses more specifically on state engineers"-- Oxford Academic. |
