Description
Summary:Providing an in-depth multifaceted analysis of the evolution and current state of national defence policies, capabilities, security challenges and strategic responses of African states, this book takes an African-centric approach and demonstrates the agency of the continent's countries and armed forces in International Security and Relations.
"While African armed forces have been either derided or the objects of disproportionate expectations, they remain yet to be properly studied. In response to this significant gap, this Handbook provides the first in-depth and multifaceted analysis of the evolution and current state of national defence policies, strategies, doctrines, capabilities, security challenges and strategic responses of African states and their armed forces. Geographically, these aspects are investigated at the national, subregional, and regional levels; and chronologically, they are analysed against the backdrop of the ‘superpower withdrawal' from the continent in the 1990s, and the so-called ‘New Scramble for Africa', which has seen a crescendo of renewed great power interest in the continent's resources, as well as its strategic role, location, and relevance since the 2000s. By taking a bottom-up and African-centric approach, the Handbook is organised around five key themes: the differing security outlooks and defence policies of African powers within the region and the different sub-regions; the strategies, doctrines, transformation, and employment of African armed forces; the position within, in relation to, and contribution of African armed forces to subregional, regional, and international organizations; the challenges African states and their armed forces have been facing and their strategic responses to address these; and, contextualising African perspective and agency in continental and international security and defence. The Handbook offers a comprehensive African perspective on African and international security and defence, and in doing so shows the agency of the continent's countries and armed forces in international security and relations."--Oxford Academic, viewed June 2, 2025.
