| Abstract: | "How do we create healthy, meaningful, and productive work? This is one of the most important questions of our time against the backdrop of major shifts occurring in work, such as the growth of hybrid models, altered forms of careers and employment contracts, new tasks and occupations due to technological change, and an aging workforce. Understanding these shifts, and indeed influencing them, urgently requires a perspective on work design that is evidence-based and state-of-the-art. Such a perspective will help to support healthy and productive work during this period of great change. In this book, 49 authors across 25 chapters provide a comprehensive overview of existing research and theory on work design, synthesizing what is known in one volume. For example, we bring together the large body of research on how work design, both individual and team-based, affects key outcomes, such as worker motivation, mental health and well-being, and job performance. Key methodological approaches for investigating work design are also covered. Beyond this important synthesis, authors also delve into under-explored yet important emerging areas of research. Thus, in line with the title of our book, the book goes beyond the well-investigated outcomes to consider, for instance, the potentially transformative role that work design may have in fostering outcomes like identity and personality development. We also shift the conversation beyond mapping the outcomes of work design to understand how work design is influenced by individual, workgroup, organizational, national, and global factors. By identifying antecedents of work design, we are better positioned to achieve better quality work, which is a core focus of several of our chapters covering "top-down" work redesigns, like self-managing teams, and "bottom-up" redesigns, such as playful work design and job crafting. Finally, the book outlines important work design issues given large-scale technological and demographic change. With remote working accelerated by the pandemic, phenomena like the Great Resignation, and the acceleration of wide-scale digitalization, there is a vital need for deep reflection about work right now. This book provides an essential and timely foundation for such analysis."--Publisher. |
