| Summary: | "This brief history of SEMT provides details of the life of the Symposium on Elementary Mathematics Teaching (SEMT), which, as its name suggests, focuses on the teaching of mathematics to children within the range of 5 to 12 years of age. The first SEMT symposium was in 1991, with the participation of some 39 educators and researchers, and since then SEMT has occurred every two years. Its location is Prague, at Charles University, in the Faculty of Education, and it is organized by the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Education staff. Every SEMT focuses on one important central theme in elementary mathematics teaching, and these themes are a strong indication of the concerns of the SEMT family at the time of the symposium. The SEMT community involves colleagues from most countries in Europe, as well as the Middle East, Japan, Australia, and the Americas. This multicultural background of the participants adds to the vibrancy of the symposium and the vigour of the interchanges between participants. This sharing of different perspectives on mathematics teaching has always been a strong and most attractive aspect of SEMT, as educators gain greater understanding of their own practice through learning about the practices of others." -- For the last 30 years the Symposium on Elementary Mathematics Teaching (SEMT) has provided cutting edge excellence in research in elementary school mathematics education. From this wealth of material this book encapsulates the trends and explores how its plenary and research papers engage with more general research for the wider mathematics education community. Trends across time are exposed and investigated while aspects of research into elementary mathematics teaching and learning are particular foci. With a diverse and truly global list of outstanding authors, this book grounds the presentations of SEMT in current practices world-wide. Each chapter features worked examples, case studies, activities, as well as a wealth of references on all topics canvassed by the authors. Furthermore each chapter is embedded within its historical setting. Together this book is an outstanding contribution to the literature on elementary mathematics education. |
