| Summary: | "For the musicians of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO), a large improvising ensemble based in Glasgow, UK, the social isolation measures implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 posed challenges to musicians' livelihoods but also led to a form of "creative constraint". This constraint inspired and facilitated new ways of collaborating artistically. This chapter examines those emerging practices as they manifest in a particular type of online musical activity. It describes key characteristics of online sessions, in particular the significance of latency, its uses and consequences. Five aspects of improvisation central to facilitating the online sessions are presented and the chapter concludes with a brief overview of the book's structure and content"-- |
