The transmission of knowledge to policy is often assumed to be an unalloyed benefit, and at times it is. Under the right circumstances, scholarly engagement in public policies can improve real-world outcomes. But there can also be hidden challenges and risks. Thorny questions arise around conflicts of interest, power aggrandizement, selective and misleading use of research, and how to present unpopular findings to stakeholders. Researchers might also be unaware of the nefarious purposes to which their work is applied, or about the point at which their findings are sought, leading to possible unintended consequences.
