| Summary: | "With dialogue and lyrics by Thomas Campion, and designs by Inigo Jones, The Lords' Masque was presented on the night of the Palatine wedding, Valentine's Day, 1613, in the Banqueting House at Whitehall Palace. It was printed in quarto in 1613 without music, but one of Campion's songs for the event was printed the following year. One other song can be reconstructed because of its lyric's close similarity to an existing Campion song, also published in 1613. With that clue, the rest of the songs have been reconstructed as contrafacta of other existing songs by Campion and Robert Jones. The dances for the masque, probably by John Coprario, can be identified from the Inns of Court dance manuscript (BL Add. 10444/5) and reconstructed from their appearance in a 1617 ensemble print by the expatriate violinist William Brade. The complete masque text is included along with the reconstructed songs and dances"-- |
