Summary:"Ernst von Dohnányi was born on July 27, 1877 in Pozsony, Hungary, a city that was at the crossroads of Hungarian and Austro-German culture. Pozsony had been of historical importance to the Kingdom of Hungary since the 11th century. A university-the only one in the country at the time-was founded there in 1467 by King Matthias I. After a decisive defeat at the Battle of Mohács in 1526 resulted in the death of King Louis II and the partitioning of the country, eastern Hungary came under the rule of the Habsburg emperors, with Pozsony as its capital. It was the site of coronations and the seat of parliament from 1536 until 1849"--
